A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from above or below the eye. Also called an eyelid lift, blepharoplasty is both a cosmetic surgery, as well as a functional one. Many individuals with hooded eyelids or excess skin due to age can have difficulty with their vision due to the excessive amounts of skin. This discomfort and impairment become a health concern that can be resolved with a blepharoplasty.

At Dr. Schoemann’s Encinitas plastic surgery practice, he is an expert in all procedures that are eyelid related. With numerous blepharoplasty’s under his belt, Dr. Schoemann and his compassionate staff will work with you to find out exactly what you want and how to best achieve that outcome for you.

What Happens During a Blepharoplasty Procedure?

The results of a blepharoplasty can be dramatic – in some cases, a slight change in eye shape is observed. When the eyelid has been weighed down with excess or wrinkled skin, the eyes can appear more closed or squinted, often causing you to look tired, angry, or upset. By removing this skin and lifting the eyelid, the eyes will appear more alert and awake. An eyelid surgery such as blepharoplasty can yield amazing results that make you look more youthful, better rested, and more attentive.

While the primary purpose of an eyelid lift is not to change the eye shape, this can often be a by-product of the procedure. The appearance of the eyes can be dramatically altered by the removal of excess skin or puffy bags under the eyes. Eyes that are weighed down or crowded by aging skin or puffy bulges may seem smaller or narrower. Once this skin is removed, the eye can appear more open, rounder, and awake.

Slight Changes May Occur

For patients with hooded eyelids, a blepharoplasty can create a smoother surface area on their eyelids, which can slightly change the appearance of the eyes and make them appear less sunken.

Predominantly speaking, the goal of a blepharoplasty is to remove unnecessary tissue and refresh the area surrounding the eye. Though small changes may occur in the appearance of your eye shape, these changes will not be drastic. Dr. Schoemann will walk you through every step of your procedure to ensure a beautiful and aesthetic result.
