schoemann plastic surgery
Medically Reviewed By: Mark Schoemann, M.D

Like any surgery, a rhinoplasty can take some time to recover from. Some results will be visible immediately following surgery, especially if there have been major alterations made. The removal of a bump or thinning of a previously broad area will produce more noticeable more quickly.

However, there will be swelling, bruising, and discoloration that can take 2-4 weeks to completely heal post-surgery. The true shape of your new nose will not be completely visible until the swelling and bruising have calmed down in the days and weeks following your procedure.

How Different Rhinoplasty Methods Address Your Concerns

At his practice in Encinitas, Dr. Schoemann will perform either a closed or open approach rhinoplasty, which may influence immediate post-surgery results. A closed rhinoplasty refers to incisions that are made only inside the nose, and this treatment approach suits patients who require minor adjustments to achieve the look and functionality they desire. An open rhinoplasty involves an additional incision that is made outside of the nose, and this approach helps patients who want a reduction in size, as it allows for a larger range of work to be completed. Open rhinoplasty is also common for those who require considerable reconstruction to the shape and look of their current nose. By working with you to determine your desired results, Dr. Schoemann will help you find the right methodology for your rhinoplasty experience.

How the Healing Process Affects Your Results

The treatment approach behind your rhinoplasty is not the only aspect that can affects how soon you can see your results. The healing process may hide your final results for more or less time than expected. For example, it is important to note that open rhinoplasty may leave a scar on your columella – the tissue of the lower part of your nose that separates your nostrils. In almost all patients, this scar heals completely and is not visible. But during the healing process from your rhinoplasty, the swelling in this area may temporarily obscure the final result.

To expedite your recovery and see your final results as soon as possible, we recommend avoiding strenuous activity and exercise during the first few weeks following surgery. Many patients also have found that keeping their heads elevated and using a cold compress helps alleviate their swelling, which promotes a speedier recovery.
